Concrete NZ - Learned Society

About the Society

The Concrete NZ Learned Society facilitates the sharing of industry knowledge, participates in the development of concrete and construction & provides a foundation for building valuable business networks, in New Zealand and overseas.

The Society is a non-profit organisation where members reap the benefits of their combined contributions. It aims to encapsulate the wealth of expertise of its membership and to output this in the form of seminars, technical publications and conferences for the betterment of the concrete and construction industry at large.

Annual Conference

The Learned Society is honoured and excited to be hosting the fib Symposium at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre 11-13 November 2024.

The fib Symposium is an annual international gathering that covers concrete and innovative materials, structural performance and design, construction methods and management, and outstanding structures.

The 2024 Concrete NZ conference will be a 1-day condensed event, and take place immediately after the Symposium on the Thursday 14 November, also at Te Pae.

Concrete Awards

To enhance opportunities for celebrating and recognising achievements in, and raise the profile of, the concrete industry, Concrete NZ has recently adopted two annual awards events.

One event remains part of the conference formal dinner. These Conference Awards are primarily inward facing. The second, new Concrete Industry Awards event is outwards facing, and is set for 27 March 2025 in Auckland.

The introduction of the new awards framework saw the Concrete Awards discontinued. The revised awards framework does, however, acknowledge and respect the historical awards.

Seminar Series

In addition to organising the Concrete NZ conference, the Learned Society is tasked with offering a regular programme of technical seminars.

The seminar presentations of research or other scholarly work, given by professionals within the wider construction industry, encourage research and foster the development/adoption of new techniques for concrete design, construction, maintenance and repair.

The most recent seminar series covered the assessment & retrofit of precast floors and precast walls & connections, both of which are available as videos that can be purchased.

Travel Bursary

A component of the Learned Society's annual budget is dedicated to supporting final year students of a relevant bachelor’s degree or a professional/taught master’s programme, attend a concrete related event - principally the Concrete NZ conference.

These $1,000 travel bursaries, approx. ten in total, are also available to early career professionals employed by a Learned Society Business or Corporate Individual member.

Access to the travel bursaries is via nominations of individuals to the Learned Society Council, which selects appropriate recipients.

Seminar Videos

Looking to boost your professional knowledge? The Learned Society offers a range of seminar videos, including the recent Assessment & Retrofit of Precast Floors and Precast Walls & Connections seminars.

Experts from across academia, the concrete industry and wider construction sector offer up-to-date technical guidance on critical engineering issues.
